From Honeymoon to Home Wreck

The day I met Jerry changed my life forever. I was a clerk at the local clothing store in a local mall. I worked in the men’s department. Jerry was shopping to buy a shirt for his brothers wedding. The moment I saw him, I knew I had to marry him. I could barely speak when he approached me. He asked me if I had a particular dress shirt in a size 32. I stumbled on my words, and 3 months later we were married. It was a storybook wedding, with 6 bridesmaids, 6 groomsmen. We honeymooned in Hawaii, my parents had been saving since the day I was born. Luckily for them, I was the only daughter, in a family of 4 children.

After our honeymoon we came home and decided to go house hunting. We looked at house after house after house from ranch to colonial to split level. We looked in housing developments and on established streets until one day we stumbled upon 1602 Thumbledown Lane, it was perfect 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a living room, family room, office. The asking price was $250,000. We went to the bank to get pre-qualified and to meet with the mortgage specialist Mrs. Majorie.

“Rebecca and Jerry there seems to be a a few issues with your credit that must be straightened out prior to our being able to give you a mortgage.”

Our faces dropped and we both glared at each other. I never had credit – not so much as a single credit card! Heck, I still lived with my parents, so I wondered what Jerry had been hiding. Jerry was wondering the same thing about me. Mrs. Majorie pulled our credit reports and it was my credit that there were issues with, it seems there were 4 credit cards listed under my name, with balances of $10,560, $5,342, $2,342, and $1,998 all of course past due by over 180 days all opened about the same time, 2 years ago. I was so embarrassed and said I had no idea what they were. Although they had my social security number listed, they also had mailing addresses from out of state. But Mrs. Majorie explained that if it they really were not my accounts that I would have to write to the credit bureaus and to the credit card companies and that everything would have to be checked out. It would take a very long time to be straightened out if it ever was.

We left the office, tears kept falling from my eyes, I tried to make them stop, but I couldn’t. I had dreamed of the day we would marry, go on our honeymoon, and most of all buy our dream home, and here this home was our dream home, and now it was all over. All the way back to our apartment, there was silence, I kept reliving the appointment over and over, and Jerry just kept shaking his head in disbelief. When we got home we had a huge fight. Jerry did not believe me, he thought they were my accounts. I tried to use logic, the addresses were across the country you would think that would have been enough. He spent the next 6 nights at his mom’s house he did not even call me once. I called his cell phone day and night but he did not return my call. We tried to work things out but after the way he treated me we ended up annulling our marriage, as he said it was the best way to go.

To this day, 3 years later, I still have bad credit and am still struggling to get out of it and prove my innocence. The address that was used for those accounts ended up being a place that only received mail. I have seen Jerry a few times, and we have spoken but he has a new girlfriend. I have a new boyfriend, who understands and is helping me fight this credit mess.
